Hearth Tax 1792 -East and middle of the county

Hearth Tax 1792 – 3634 names – The lists were laid out by parish and usually record the townland, name of the head of the household, the number of hearths, and the amount of the tax levied.

Meath Parishes covered: Ardcath, Ardmulchan, Athlumney, Ballymagarvey, Brownstown, Clonalvy, Colp, Danestown, Donore, Downstown (Dowdstown), Dowth, Duleek, Dunsany, Fennor, Gernonstown, Kentstown,  Kilcarn, Killary, Killeen, Kilsharvan, Knockcommon, Macetown, Mitchelstown, Monknewtown, Monktown, Painstown, Rathfeigh, Screen, Slane, Stackallen, Syddan, Tara, Trevit.

Ms. 26735: Hearth tax : Duleek, Donore, Kilsharvan, Colp, Ardcath.

Ms. 26736: Hearth tax: Clonalvy, Rathfeigh, Ballymagarvy, Kentstown, Brownstown, Knockcommon, Fennor, Painstown, Ardmulchan

Ms. 26737: Hearth tax:  Athlumney, Kilcarn, Dowdstown, Tara, Danestown, Monktown Macetown, Trevet, Killeen, Dunsany.

Ms. 26738: Hearth tax : Monknewtown, Dowth, Killary, Mitchelstown, Siddan, Ardagh, Slane, Stackallan, Gernonstown.

Initiated in 1662, the Hearth Tax was collected and recorded on Hearth Money Rolls within the Court of the Exchequer.

Names are not standardized. Place names and surname appear as they are in the records. Names were spelled as they sounded in 1792. For example Ryly was their spelling of Reilly, Murtha instead of Murtagh, Hoy instead of Hoey, Mathis instead of Matthews and so on some names may not appear in places you might not expect so do search all variations.

 Names of townland names were not standardized until the OS did their first maps in the 1830s. Spellings of townlands may differ from the official ones. Townlands may appear in parishes which they are not now in. There are many names of areas where the townland is not identified but was an area identified in 1792. I have had to standardize some things as in Montown and Monkenewtown instead of Mounttown and Mountnewtown
