CASTLEJORDAN GRAVEYARD CO. MEATH

HEADSTONES AND INSCRIPTIONS

Recorded by Dr. Beryl F. E. Moore & Miss A.M. Quinn & Mr. M. Kenny. 1976

CASTLE JORDAN GRAVEYARD MEASURMENTS – east 38 yards, south 55 yards, west 62 yards and north 73 yards.  There is a shallow ditch inside an old stone wall on the east, south and north east sides, while on the west side there is a 12 foot ditch apparently belonging to Castlejordan’s military past.  Fr. Callary made a study of this matter and came to the conclusion that the west was the weak side and therefore the one the enemy (the Irish) were likely to attack from.  In February 1976 a large ivy-covered tree fell at the east side of the graveyard bringing down some of the old wall.

THE CHURCH – a rectangular building in poor repair, closed for worship for some five years.  There is a 3 storied tower at the west end with a stone plaque over the door on the south side with the date – 1823 – on it.  There are 2 windows on the north and south sides and a vestry also on the north side.  Inside we get A FONT …with the following  inscription on it…”SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME.  TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF KATHERINE CONGREVE  DIED MARCH 2Oth 1896”.  There is a headstone in the graveyard  (No. 19) commemorating Katherine Congreve who died on March 20th  1896.

THE EAST WINDOW – is a very nice one which some Church notes refer to as having been designed by the Tower of Glass Works Dublin but I was unable to verify this.  The window is in 8 sections, 2 on the top and 3 in the middle and 3 below.  The inscription is “THIS WINDOW IS ERECTED BY HELEN DORA RUSSELL TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF HER MOTHER ELLEN RUSSELL WHO DIED 15.MARCH1909 AND OF HER BROTHER HENRY JOHN RUSSELL WHO DIED AUGUST 20. 1902”.  There are 2 well carved old chairs.

Old wall…on the south side of the Church and 30 ft from it there is 48 ft of an old wall less that one foot above ground.  Could it be part of an older church?

Callary in his article  on Castlejordan in Rioch Na Mide in year 1957 tells us that Sir Francis Digby Esq came from Coleshill Warwickshire and a direct descendant of  his Sir Robert Digby married Lettuce only child of Gerald Fitzgerald Lord of Offaly and Granddaughter of Gerald 11th.  Earl of Kildare in 1620; by this marriage he became the owner of the castle and estate of his wife at Geashill Co. Offaly where some of his descendants still reside.  Digbie is the spelling of the name on this headstone but by 1600 it was Digby.  The person commemorated is a man but Francis is here spelt Frances as for a female nowadays.
