CASTLEKIERAN  GRAVEYARD, CO. MEATH

TOMBSTONES AND INSCRIPTIONS

Recorded by Dr Beryl F. E . Moore & Ml. Kenny 1975

CASTLEKIERAN GRAVEYARD is in a field not far from the road and close to the south bank of the river Blackwater.  It is surrounded by a good wall and a high bank with a hawthorn hedge.  It is rectangular, measuring 51 by 72 yds and had a good path around it, which is now completely grass-covered.  On the east side about the middle is a  clump of shrubs 10 yds square, so we have been unable to follow our usual practice of  recording first all headstones on the east, but have had to do the north-east and south-east corners instead.  This is a badly kept graveyard and nearly impossible to walk about in and apparently only has its grass cut in mid-summer.

North-east corner of east side of graveyard.

24)  MCNAMEE 1831…A large wide stone with a domed top and 2 stopper-stones.  This stone contains the best carving in Castlekieran graveyard.  A crucifixion in  centre at top with OUR LORD’S Head leaning to viewer’s left, arms upraised, Good head of hair, cleanshaven, wears a loincloth and has straight legs.  A cherub is carved above on each side and also another pair of cherubs are carved below.  “ERECTED BY RICHARD McNAMEE IN MEMORY OF HIS FATHER WILLIAM McNAMEE WHO DEPrd THIS LIFE  SEPT. THE 24TH 1831 AGED 71 YEARS”.  At bottom ‘REQUIESCAT IN PACE’.  There is a motiff  in connection with this crucifixion which we have not so far been able to solve…it is to viewer’s right of  Our Lord’s loincloth and looks like material hanging in folds.  It may be an extra length of loincloth not wrapped round the body.  2 holes are clearly to be seen at the top.  Another suggestion is a couple of ropes hanging up or scourges.

25)  FARRELLY 1907–10 – A peaked top with cross and IHS in its centre.  “IN LOVING MEMORY OF PATRICK FARRELLY OF KIERAN WHO DIED 24TH FEBy     1910 AGED 81 YEARS.  ALSO HIS ELDEST SON LAURENCE WHO DIED 14TH M ARCH 1908 AGED 27 YEARS.  AND HIS YOUNGEST SON PATRICK WHO DIED 20TH OCTr 1907 AGED 14 YEARS”.  At  bottom W. the inscription was on it.  This stone is flaking very badly.  There is a full sunburst with cross IHS and heart with a plant growing out of it.  There is a frame around the inscription composed of a leafy trail.  “ERECTED BY PATRICK WIN IN MEMORY OF HIS FATHER OWN (NO E) WIN DIED MARCH 3rd 1821 AGED 83 YEARS.  ALSO HIS  MOTHER BETtY WIN DIED MAY 4th 1817 AGED 71 YEARS.  ALSO HIS BROTHER CHARLES DIED MAY 12.  1819 AGEd 25 YEARS”.  The second ‘t’ of Betty is very small compared with the first one.

SLOAN MONUMENTAL SCULPTOR, 1  PORTOBELLO PLACE, DUBLIN.

34)  VAULT – Dr. Philip O’Connell thought it likely that this vault belonged to the Plunkett Family.  It passes under the south wall of the Church and is a stone-lined room under the graveyard.  The roof is arched and the entrance is a fine archway with its keystone but no door has survived.  Apparently it was riffled years ago and only bits of coffins and bones have survived.

35)  MADDEN  1890 – This stone and the next one are at the west end of the Church ruins.  It is a solid cross with IHS in the centre on top of a slab.  “IN LOVING MEMORY OF THOMAS MADDEN WOOLPOLE WHO DIED APRIL 12th 1890 AGED 64 YEARS.  ALSO HIS BELOVED WIFE M. 37)  FARRELLY 1846-1927…This grave is at the south-west corner of the church ruins and its large plot is surrounded by a high wall on 3 sides and a high iron railing on the fourth side.  2 large yew trees are growing inside the plot and have done considerable damage.  Even after a good dressing with a slash-hook there are still parts of this stone that can’t be examined.  It is an immense headstone…9ft high and nearly 4 ft wide.  There was some object on top which the trees have swept off, likely a cross.  There is a lamb on a cross and rays proceed upwards from it.  Then there is a floral design carved from side to side and a scroll with ‘GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO’.  “OH LORD HAVE MERCY ON THE SOUL OF LAURENCE FARRELLY OF CASTLEKIERAN WHO DIED FEBRUARY 17th 1863 AGED 65 YEARS.  ALSO HIS BELOVED WIFE MARGARET WHO DIED 25th APRIL 1848 AGED 50 YEARS.  ALSO THEIR BELOVED SON THOMAS WHO DIED 7TH MAY 1846 AGED 21 YEARS.  MICHAEL FARRELLY OF CASTLEKIERAN WHO DIED OCT. 29th 1916 AGED 84 YEARS.  ALSO HIS WIFE BRIDGET WHO DIED JULY 12th 1914 AGED 83 YEARS.  LAURENCE FARRELLY DIED 16th MARCH 1927 AGED 58 YEARS”.  Lower down we get “ON WHOSE SOULS SWEET JESUS HAVE MERCY R I P “.  At bottom FITZPATRICK & MOLLOY
