HEADSTONE INSCRIPTIONS

Crickstown C. O’Flanagan

ROONEY – Erected by Mrs Mary Rooney.  In memory of her beloved husband Edward Rooney died 1st February 1892 aged 79 years.  Also his wife Mary Rooney died 21st June 1908.  Also Jane Rooney their beloved daughter- in-law who died September, 18th aged-? At base of headstone- And their son Christopher Rooney – died 10th April 1920.  Sculptors –Fitzpatrick & Sons – Glasnevin.

KEOGH – Sacred Heart of Jesus Have Mercy on the soul of John. F. Keogh, Kilbrew House, Ashbourne.  Who died 6th November 1924 aged 72 years.   And his son John F. Who died 7th February, 1929 aged 26 years.

EDGLEY – Margaret Edgley died at Crickstown 18th July 1937.  Violet died 9th December 1962.  Mary Clare died 16th march, 1969

KEOGH – Charles Keogh, Ballyhack died 20th June 1924 aged 71 years.  Wife Mary died 21st July 1924 aged 66 years.  Son James died 19th march, 1960 aged 60.

TOOLE – Thomas Toole died 11th February 1947.   His brother Philip died 15th May 1950 Doris wife of Thomas died 9th July, 1989.

BOBBETT – Erected by William and Laurence Bobbett.   In memory of their beloved father William Bobbett of Crickstown  who died 29th March 1883 aged 50 yrs.  Requiescent in Pace.  T.H Dennehy, Glasnevin.

There are 2 small stones close to the path on the left of entrance – no legible inscription. There is also a similar stone some 5 yards further on.  We also suspect that there are many more stones buried just under the surface. These stones may be grave markers or possibly stray stones from the Church.

BOSHELL – Mary Boshell, Curraha died 8th April 1964.  Her husband Michael died 14th May 1933.  Interred in Ratoath.

PLUNKETT – Jack Plunket, Crickstown died 28th November 1972 aged 74 years. Also his wife Alice died 17th August 1990.  Interred in Curraha.

KEOGH – Thomas Keogh.  Erected by Thomas Keogh, Ballyhack in memory of Elizabeth Farrell died 16th January 1948.  His sister Annie interred in Glasnevin.  Above Thomas died 11th February, 1973.  Grandson Fergal born 24-3-1968 died 9-11-1969.

LANDY – This stone was erected by Richard Landy of Baltrasna, Co Dublin in 1822 for him and his posterity.  Here lieth John Landy his son who died young and Jane his daughter who also died young.  Here also lieth Mrs Mary Landy who departed this life 7th July, 1825 aged 34 years.  Have mercy Lord on the soul of the above named Richard Landy who died 11th April 1837 aged 83 years.

O’CONNOR – Thomas O’Connor, Coolfore, Ashbourne.  His wife Nora.  Their sons Nicholas 5th February, 1950.  James 22nd July, 1961.

There are 2 small uninscribed stones between the O’Connor and Landy plots.

LANDY – Erected by Peter Landy Baltrasna, Co Dublin In memory of his beloved father

Michael who died 7th August, 1831.  Also his brother Patrick who died 19th April 1866 – ? 1886.  And his mother Catherine Landy who died 14th  April 187-?   Also the above named Peter Landy who died 14th April 1908 aged 86 years.  Also his wife Catherine Landy who died 14th November 1912 aged 86 years.  And their son Robert Peter Landy who died 8th Dec.1910 aged 31 years.  On those Souls may the Lord have Mercy.  On base of headstone – Margaret Landy died 24th July 1940.  Michael Joseph Landy M.B.R.U.I. -? died 5th April 1944 – Interred in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Leytonstone, London

ROONEY – In loving Memory of John Connell Rooney Baltrasna who died 27th June 1946.  His wife Kathleen who died 6th May 1952.  Rest in Peace

CROMWELL – Erected by Alicia Cromwell of Curraha in memory of her beloved aunt Bridget Landy who died February, 1884.  Also her uncles Peter Landy who died 1840 and Patrick Landy who died 1858.

KENNEDY – Erected by Michael Kennedy of Fleenstown, Co Meath in loving memory of his father Thomas Kennedy who died 25th December, 1838 aged 62 years.  Also two of his children who died young.  Also his grandfather Patrick Kennedy, Creekstown who died at an advanced age.  Julia Kennedy died 4th December, 1916 aged 82 years  David Kennedy died 11th April 1917 aged 79 years.

FAGAN – This monument was erected Rev. Thomas Fagan – Parish Priest of Dunshaughlin in memory of his parents Richard Fagan who departed this life on 6th June 1780 and Alice King who died 19th March, 1777 and their posterity.

There is a large rectangular stone without inscription beside the Fagan plot – this is possibly the grave of Rev. Thomas Fagan.who died 6th February, 1809 who according to Vol.11 of Cogan’s “Diocese of Meath” is buried in an unmarked grave in Crickstown Cemetery.  “A large unmarked stone marks his resting place”

There is also another stone here – it’s sunken quite deep and there seems to be an inscription on the side facing the ruins.

KEONAN – This stone was erected by the Exectrs. of the Rev. Patrick Keonan Parish Priest of Trevet to his memory who departed this life the 7th May, 1809 aged 60 years.

MITCHELL – Erected to the memory of Rev. John Mitchell by the Parish of Curragha and Trevet in testimony of their affection and esteem for him, on account of the many virtues which distinguished him during his Sacred Ministery as their Pastor.  Died 12th January 1825 aged 35 years.

BEGG – Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on the soul of  Mary Begg, Crickstown, Ashbourne 9th February 1953 Aged 91 years.  And her sister Rosanna Morris, Gaulstown, Dunshaughlin 16th November 1942 aged 76 years R.I.P.

KELLY – This Monument erected by Martin Kelly of Crackenstown in memory of Mary Kelly his wife who departed ,this life march 30; 1790 aged 44 years.  His son John Kelly who departed, this life February 23 1795 aged 23 years.  Also the above Martin Kelly who departed. this life the year of 1803 aged 67 years.  And also of his son Edward Kelly who departed. this life the 4th March 1824 aged 36 years.  Also two children of the above Edward who died young.  Requiescant en Pace  KELLY – Mary died 28th December 1848 aged 57 years.

KELLY – James Kelly died the 21st July 1882 aged 1 month.  James Kelly died 28th July 1893 aged 80 years.  Marcella Kelly died 9th September 1894 aged 82 years

KING – Margaret King, Crickstown, Co Meath – died 12th February 1875 husband Thomas King died 6th February, 1853 daughter Margaret Mary died March 1872 sons Nicholas King –Died 29th October.  Richard died 3rd December 1902 John died 9th April 1908 Mary wife of Richard Died 1ST January 1901. 

There is an older King headstone beside the above inscription are illegible

DRU?RAY – George Dru?ray.  Erected by Anne Dru?ray of Curragha in memory of her beloved husband George Dru?ray who departed this life 24th August 1806 aged 45 years. ? 1866 or 1886.

BOYLEIN – This stone was erected by Nocholas and Thomas Boylein in memory of their deceased parents.

BOYLE – Here lieth the bodies of Patrick Boyle who departed this life the 4th July, 1750 aged 86 years  and also the body of his daughter Alice Boyle who died the 14th August, 1753.

Small stone – no inscription.

——- this stone ——- died February 25th, 1787 aged 27.  Also their mother Mary aged 55 (o-l-y ?) died June 16th 1747 aged 51 years    e

With their sister Catherine who died August      y   15th 1753 aged 31 years.  For them and their posterity

ADRIEN –William Edward Adrien, M.D. Oldtown, Co, Dublin in memory of his beloved wife Mary Theresa who departed this life on 28th May 1853 aged 37 years.  Also his daughter Bessie Josephine who departed this life March 19th 1874 aged 23 years.

KEARNS – In loving memory of Margaret Kearns, Wotton who died 9th March 1966 aged 62 years.  And her beloved husband Patrick who died 28th November 1985 aged 89 years.  Their daughter Kathleen who died 31nd January 1995 aged 58 years.  R.I.P.

KEARNS – Erected to the memory of Catherine Kearns, Wotton, The Ward  died 24th January 1942 aged 73 years.  And her beloved husband Patrick Kearns died 1st February 1953 aged 83 years.  R.I.P.  Erected by their loving family

There are two unmarked stones on right hand side of entrance also the square black stone at foot of Kearns plots and two others at top left of Kearns plots.

NOTE;  we have done our best to decipher as many headstone inscriptions as possible without causing damage to the stones.  We used handfuls of wet grass as a “rub”.

More information can be obtained in the Parish Records which are held at Curraha Parochial House from 1830 onwards.  Earlier records are held at Ratoath Parochial House  Trim Heritage Centre is a great source of information .

There are probably many inaccuracies in above records –let us know and we will correct them.
