DONAGHMORE CHURCHYARD NAVAN CO. MEATH

MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS

Recorded by Noel E. French

July 1987

By tradition St. Patrick founded a church here and put it in charge of St. Cassan.  The original church has disappeared and on its site was erected in the twelfth or thirteenth century a parish church the western end and belfry of which still stands.

A round tower, also a legacy from the monastery here stands in the graveyard.  It stands 110 feet high and measures 66 feet in girth at the base. Above the door is a sculpture of the Crucifixion.  Petrie ascribes the round tower to the tenth century.  A gravestone of that period also exists in the graveyard inscribed with a cross.

At Donaghmore the coffin was carried around the graveyard three times as a mark of respect or honour to the Holy Trinity.  A path still runs around the inside of the graveyard.

A local committee have cleaned and tidied up this graveyard and it is truly a credit to their work.

They have also erected a slab in remembrance of the 1798 rebellion. Tradition has it that one of the croppies was buried here late at night after having died of injuries occasioned on the Hill of Tara. The inscriptions reads “1798 This monument commemorates all those who fell at the battle of Tara and buried here. Liberty – Justice – Equality.

Erected by the local community August 1984. A dhia Saor Eire”.

For more information on Donaghmore see “Navan By the Boyne” by Noel E. French.
